Hopupu glossary
Description of the Hopupu surf reports
3 types
Instant / same day reports :
Instant reports are used to describe a spot's conditions in real time or the expected conditions for the same day.
Tomorrow forecasts :
These forecasts describe the expected spot's conditions for tomorrow.
Next days forecasts :
Next days forecasts describe the expected spot's conditions for the days after tomorrow.
Wind / Wave reports & forecasts
When you publish a surf report / forecast, you must indicate whether it is related to Wave sports (surfing, bodyboard, skimboard, bodysurf, ...) or Wind sports (windsurfing, kite surfing , ...).
Indeed, the grades and the descriptions of the surf conditions of a spot are not appreciated in the same way depending on the practiced sports.
Grades
Thanks to the Hopupu rating system, you can grade a spot in order to assess the quality of the surf conditions..
Each grade is automatically associated with a clear and concise description. This description is explicit enough to give you a clear idea of the current (instant report) or expected (same day or next days forecasts) conditions on your spots.
In addition to the description associated with each grade, you will find more precise information about the surf conditions of the spot. To open the entire report / forecast and access the detailed description, you just to click on the blue button below the grade: " i more info ".
The type of information available depends on the type of reports / forecasts you are checking (wave sports or for wind sports).
Wave reports / forecasts Information
Imagined for wave riders, it provides the necessary information needed to practice wave sports.
The associated pictograms are here to help you assess more easily the surf conditions.
Wave size:
Measured with the face scale method, here is why: in the impact zone, you take the breaking wave on your head. The pictogram changes depending on the picked size. Here is the list of the different sizes:
-
≈ 50cm [Ankle high]
-
≈ 1m [Knee high]
-
≈ 1,2m [Waist high]
-
≈ 1,5m [Shoulder High]
-
≈ 2m [Head High]
-
≈ 2,5 - 3m feet [Over head]
-
≈ 3 - 4,5m [2x Over Head]
-
≈ 4,5 - 6m [3x Over Head]
-
> 6m [Nasty Bombs]
Period:
Measured in seconds. Used to evaluate the waves' power. It is commonly accepted that a 12 second period is recommended for quality waves. The pictogram changes according to the chosen period. Here is the listing of the different wave intervals available:
-
1 to 5 secs
-
6 to 8 secs
-
8 to 10 secs
-
10 to 12 secs
-
13+ secs
Wind force:
We are using the Beaufort scale here. By far the most understood and used on the planet, this universal scale has been adapted in order to keep only the most common wind forces for wave sports. Regarding the description, we are referring to the sea conditions. The pictogram changes depending on the force. Here is the listing of the different forces we use:
-
0 [0-1 km/h] - Glassy
-
1 [1-5 km/h] - Ripples
-
2 [6-11 km/h] - Small wavelets
-
3 [12-19 km/h] - Large wavelets
-
4 [20-28 km/h] - Small waves
-
5+ [30+ km/h] - Hard to surf
Wind direction:
In order to provide a smoother and faster reading experience, we are not using cardinal points. The pictogram remains the same, only the text changes. Here is the list of wind directions available on Hopupu:
-
Glassy (No wind)
-
Onshore
-
OffShore
-
Sideshore
-
Side-Onshore
