About Hopupu

The exchange of simplified surf reports

It all started in 2009, while I was an exchange student in San Diego. Every day at 7am, the well-known ritual of all wave lovers was to check the closest spots to my house.

For me, it was on Mission Beach, with a peanut butter sandwich and a coffee that I made my first reports, shared on Facebook, in private message, to my friends living along the coast.

The very first stone was laid.

Sharing surf reports & ads at the same time

That same year, while in an internship at a local surf shop, two things jumped out at me:

  1. Surfing professionals don't have any adapted tool to promote themselves

  2. The expertise of these professionals on their spots is obvious.

The Hopupu ecosystem started to make sens.

Putting surf forecasts at the service of those who fight for the planet and the oceans

A few years later, the idea is still there. The application prototypes are constantly evolving, but while new features appear, the ecosystem remains incomplete.

It took me way too long to realize that the idea was right there. Heavily polluted oceans over exploited resources, number of climate crisis exponentially rising, ... the list is so long that more and more organizations take actions. There is a collective awareness , especially in the surfing world.

The Hopupu ecosystem is now complete and the idea looks good. Surf reports can definitely activate this "three wheels" model, in which surf, economy and ecology can fuel a virtuous cycle.

HoPuPu ... What's that name?

There have been a few names... This one is what best describes the state of mind of all wave and wind sports lovers, whether they are simple amateurs like me, or local, regional, national or international legends.

No need to insist, I will not tell you more here, I could never give you a description as striking as the one you will find on page 139 of a magical book I was given a few years ago:

Vagues, Le fabuleux spectacle de l'océan (éditions Aubanel)

(available on all online platforms, but let's be local, you will certainly find it at your local bookstore)
